What a week!
Silas turned on Tuesday. We had a nice evening Monday night opening presents as a family of three at home. Tuesday Silas spent the day at his grandma’s with his cousins, Parker & Chandler, and Aunt Anita from Ohio. Luckily Laura was able to get off early, and we were able to all eat dinner and spend the evening with Laura’s family. Jarrett was able to fly a kite for the first time in his life. It ended up being a long day, but Silas was as happy as could be playing outside even till well after bedtime. Wednesday, we took Silas for his 1 year photo shoot (and first professional). He was not very cooperative. He was a little uneasy on the back drop, not giving up the smiles, and refused to do his “tricks.” We were still able to get some cute ones thanks to props and tickles. Thursday and Friday were more low key as were the temperatures that kept us more in doors. Silas just loves being outside these days, keeping him in was a little rough. He loves to go one walks/runs in the stroller or to just push around his “walker.” He has still not taken any steps on his own, but he is getting more confident in standing unassisted. He has also gotten to the top of the stairs and turned around to go down feet first unassisted (this was while Jarrett was sweeping on the stairs). Silas has also started to use “Maaaaama” to refer to Laura and has reportedly used “baw” in reference to a ball. Today we spent the afternoon with family, “like family,” and some neighbors to celebrate Silas in our lives and watch him get messy with cake. Unfortunately he did not really get into the cake….he liked the whipped cream icing a bit, spit out the cake, and got messy more at the hands of Uncle Timmy & Daddy. Silas was more then happy to have several helpings of the fresh fruit salad; getting a bit dirty eating it from the remnants of cake still on his hands. It was a fun day enjoying the outdoors & guests.
Silas turned 1

•March 9, 2010 • Leave a CommentSpring is on it way to settle for the season (we hope) and Silas’ first Birthday is just around the corner. This first year flew by, and I have not updated the blog as often as I would have liked. Here is where we are now. Silas is about 21.5lbs by our home scale. Silas is pushing chairs and things around walking. He is up the stairs in a blink of the eye. He has pretty much given up baby food and loves almost everything offered to him to eat, as long as it is not too bland or too spicy. He has spent most of this year so far fighting one cold after another. He is still usually a very happy, easygoing boy. He has 8 front teeth and working on a molar or two. His vocabulary comprehension is growing and he is starting to use da/daaaad & ma/maaam appropriately. His sign language is slow coming still only doing all done and an occasional more; we’re still working on please and thank you. He loves giving kisses, high 5’s, and waving bye-bye (or by when used in a book). He also can point to other people’s nose and mouth. He likes to play with toys that rattle or play music. Although, his favorite toy is a fisher-price fire truck that makes no noise and is missing all its accessories. Jarrett and I just enjoy spending time with him and look forward to exploring the outside with him as the weather continues to get nicer.
Over the winter we got a few good snows, which allowed us to get Silas out to play in it and pull him around in his sled. Silas also enjoyed his first Christmas, probably the wrapping paper the best. He was also dedicated at our church just after the beginning of the year. The season was a wonderful time of spending time with family and friends.
Jarrett got me an early Birthday present, something I have been wanting for a while and we gave it a try the other night…so here is the first of more to come! A video of Silas walking with his push toy done with my new Flip video camera. Thanks Bubba.

Waving pirate for Halloween
It has been too long since the last update. It is amazing how fast life goes and before you know it months have gone. Silas is now 7 months old and around 19lbs.
We are beginning to look at “big boy” car seats. He has been rolling over proficiently for awhile now and is sitting up on his own. He is just beginning to get up on his hands and knees and rock…once in awhile a lunge forward. He has got a pretty good army crawl working to get him to the things he wants and half the time should not have. We are continually adding baby proof products in our home. Silas loves to be outside and to play with his toys, especially a fisher price little people farm.
He is still a very happy baby, even while he broke his first teeth (he is up to 2 on the bottom).
We suspect he is working on a tooth or two on the top now as evidenced by the drool and increased chewing. He still sleeps great, had a few rough early mornings here recently with the time change, but I think we are getting pretty adjusted now. Silas has also started the adventure of solid foods. He loves to eat squash, carrots, sweet potato, peas, green beans, asparagus, and banana. He has a rough time with broccoli, although he seemed to like it the first time he art it. He also does not care for the baby puffs thus far,
he wont even stick them in his mouth himself (even though everything else he gets his hands on goes right there). We look forward to expanding to fruits soon.
Not too much going on around the home outside of the normal routine.
At the end of October was the annual youth retreat to Kentucky. It was an adventure this year trying to serve in various capacities and meet the needs of a 7 month old. We were blessed to have a friend volunteer to watch him during activities we were involved in so we would be able to focus. It turned out he slept most of the time we were busy. It was a wonderful retreat! We had a great time with the students and the teaching was wonderful. Our senior pastor taught out of Colossians…we learned so much, but to sum up quickly- deep roots, dehydration, amnesty.
Jarrett’s work has been going well. He has been able to enjoy deepening relationships with neighbors as the fall outdoor chores have provided some bonding time. He did unfortunately hurt his knee playing basketball at the end of September and was having some progress with healing that has recently regressed. He is going to have it looked at more closely to make sure there is no severe underlying damage not noticed earlier due to the swelling he had right after the injury.
Laura has finally gotten a good routine going with work and being prepared for sending Silas out of the house and being away for the day. It can be rough now that Silas sleeps 11-12 at night she only gets to peek at him in his crib on the days she works. Laura was able to go on a women’s retreat at the beginning of October that was very rejuvenating for her and she learned many things. One big thing was how to look at life through a 24hour frame in day to day issues and through an eternity frame for big decisions.
We are very much enjoying our time now together as a family. Silas is such a joy in our lives and we can see how with his loving & happy spirit he has brought joy to many others also. We are really enjoying this stage Silas is in, although it is beginning to be more work keeping him out of things and starting to discipline (he has teeth and bites now). We will try to stay more up to date with updates. The holiday’s do get so busy, but they should bring a lot to write about.

July Flew By
•August 9, 2009 • Leave a CommentJarrett started out the month visiting Peter Nevins in Colorado with his buddies Ed & Phil. They had a great time hanging out doing guy stuff. Their adventures included a mountain hike and watching a Rockies game.
Our nephew Jackson Wade Horne was born on July 2nd. We have made several trips out to visit the new
family. It has been fun already to have the cousins together and we look forward to the years ahead raising them up as good buddies and friends. The new family is settling in to their new lives nicely.

Laura started back to work while Jarrett was gone. It has been a smooth transition. Work itself has gone well for her, but the preparation for those days is more then expected. The routine for those days is getting easier. Silas enjoys the undivided attention of very loving family & and friends while mom is away.

Silas has been growing like a weed and is 15lbs. He is laughing and has become ticklish. He also just

started rolling over from his stomach to his back. He also gets onto his side from his back, but has not yet figured out how to shift his weight to get onto his stomach. Although he would probably prefer to not end up on his stomach. He also seems to scoot and spin around by lifting up his bottom with his legs, you never know what position you will find him in these days after a nap. Silas has also started teething leading to a lot of chewing o

n his hands and drool on everything. He is getting over a cold right now that he shared with his mom. At the beginning of his cold he had pink eye which lead us to the doctor for the first sick child appointment. He did very well letting mom put in his eye drops, which cleared up his eyes quickly.

Silas had his first plane ride and vacation last week as we spent time out in Rhode Island with the Garrison family. We are grateful for their hospitality while we visited at their vacation home on the bay. We had a wonderful time visiting, boating, sailing, shopping, relaxing, and eating (including fresh lobster!!!). Time there was a good break from busy normal life and filled with encouragement and fellowship.

While out east, we were also able to meet up with Laura’s Uncle Danny, Aunt Lisa, & cousin Claire. We enjoyed the New England Aquarium & wondering the streets of Boston. They were able to meet Silas and enjoy his company at dinner at a quaint little Italian restaurant. Unfortuntely we missed the opportunity to get pictures of Silas with them (he was asleep when we had the cameras out). I guess that just means we will have to see them soon.
Pool, Baseball, Camping…All in a Summers Week
•June 30, 2009 • Leave a Comment
It was a hot week, but that did not keep us down. Silas and Laura joined some friends at a water park/pool at the Y in Fishers several times this last week. Silas liked the big pool better than the frigged, zero entry pool. He even fell asleep while Laura held him in the big pool the second day. They were quick trips just about an hour in the morning before it got too hot and to keep Silas from getting too much sun exposure. He is covered though with swim shorts, a UV50 shirt, UV swim hat, and his sunglasses. It was a good way to cool down.

Laura & Silas at the TinCaps Baseball game.
Friday we headed up to Albion and Ft. Wayne. In the afternoon, we went to Chain O’Lakes State Park to set up for our first camping trip with Silas. Then we went to watch the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (minor league baseball) for EP & DRG company outing (Jarrett’s work). It was a nice set up with picnic tables in the right outfield all reserved and all you can eat dinner & drinks. We had a good time chatting and catching a few plays. Silas was loved on by some of the co-workers and one of the owners wives (Naomi). She carried him around as she met up with a lot of the employees and her friends. It was very loud at points, but Silas didn’t seem to mind and even took a nap. We got back to the campsite pretty late. Our friends had arrived and finished setting up. We did S’mores and went to bed.

Silas slept well each night and did well with naps on Saturday. We went on one big HOT hike on Saturday morning, of which Silas slept through in the carrier with Laura. It took everything out of everyone even though it was not a very rugged or exciting hike. Not the best hiking trails we’ve done, but it did have sweet rewards. Some of us took a few stops along the path to enjoy the ripe black raspberries. That afternoon we played some cards and the girls checked out the beach on one of the “lakes.” The water was a perfect temperature…but pretty disgusting with slimy sand and seaweed on the bottom and all kids of gross floaties in the water. You could only see a few inches through the water. We did not stay long and took showers after that experience. Sunday we packed up and headed home early. Silas fell asleep in his screened-in bouncy seat playing while we packed.
It was a fun week and makes us look forward to many more fun summer days and trips in our future as a family.
